Mesenteric Ischemia Treatment
Ischemia occurs when blood cannot flow through the mesenteric arteries as it should, and the intestines do not receive the necessary oxygen to perform normally. Over time, this blockage causes the intestinal tissues to die due to lack of blood flow.
There are several causes of mesenteric ischemia, including atherosclerosis (artery plaque buildup), embolus (blood clot), coagulation disorders, low blood pressure, congestive heart failure, aortic dissection or blockage of veins in the bowel.
Angioplasty and stenting are commonly used by our vascular physicians to restore blood flow in the mesenteric arteries.
Symptoms of Mesenteric Ischemia
Patients with chronic mesenteric ischemia may experience severe abdominal pain 15 to 60 minutes after eating. The pain may occur in any part of the abdomen and may last for as long as 60 to 90 minutes.
Other symptoms that may occur include:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Flatulence
- Constipation
