Pinehurst Surgical Clinic is proud to be a leader in GYN oncology, offering annual pap smears and other diagnostic procedures to assist in the detection of precancerous cells indicating cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer or vulvar cancer.
When a pap smear is abnormal, there are a number of tests that can be performed to determine if the cells are cancerous or benign, including:
- Colposcopy – This in-house procedure takes small biopsies from the cervix or vaginal wall.
- LEEP (Loop electrosurgical excision procedure) – When a colposcopy indicates that further therapy is necessary, a LEEP is used to obtain a larger biopsy. This is also performed as an in-house procedure.
Gynecologic ultrasounds performed at our nationally-accredited ultrasound laboratory may also be used to diagnose gynecologic cancer. In addition, these exams can be used to assess the pelvic organs or diagnose a number of gynecologic conditions, including endometriosis.
