Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD or PAD) Treatment
Similar to cardiovascular disease, PVD or PAD is caused by the buildup of cholesterol (known as plaque), which disrupts normal blood flow to arteries in the vascular system.
Some of the signs and symptoms of peripheral vascular disease include leg pain and calf cramping (or claudication), in the leg. In addition, the following risk factors may increase your chance of developing PVD or PAD:
- High blood pressure
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Inactive lifestyle
If left untreated, this disease usually progresses impairing or limiting lifestyle and may lead to lower extremity wounds and other complications. If you believe you may be at risk for peripheral vascular or peripheral arterial disease, contact our office for a vascular consultation with one of our board certified surgeons.
Plaque Excision Procedure for PVD: hawkone™ System
Pinehurst Surgical Clinic is proud to offer a minimally invasive procedure to remove plaque in the arteries of the leg — the FDA-cleared HawkOne™ Plaque Excision System. Unlike stenting and angioplasty (other common treatments for PVD or PAD), this device cleans out the artery by removing the plaque altogether — not simply pushing the plaque up against the artery walls. And unlike open bypass surgery, plaque excision is largely non-invasive.
